Little Town

Most of our songs are the result of experimentation with musical instruments and effects. With the song Little Town things went a bit differently.

One day in the studio Tara was trying out a new camera she had found at the thrift store, and did so by interviewing Yen. At some point she asked him if he could explain to the camera how he goes about writing songs. Scrambling for words and metaphors in an attempt to clarify the vague process of inspiration and manifestation, he said the following.

"Writing songs is a bit like fishing. You cast your line out into the water, blindly trusting that beneath the surface there is something that might be willing to bite. If you are patient enough, and if you tempt it with the right bait, you might just catch something."

As a demonstration Yen started playing some chords and began humming a faint melody over top. It didn’t take long before the humming turned into singing and the words "in a little town by the coast" came flowing out. When this happened it was as if someone had flipped a switch and you could feel the excitement in the air. A new song had revealed itself.

During the recording of the song they called in the help of their friends Dan Holbourne and Nicolaas Walle, who played acoustic guitar and electric bass respectively. With the help of their musical contributions the song has become what it is today.
